Why Business Owners Say Meta Ads Don’t Work.

Over the past few months, I’ve heard a lot of comments and complaints from business owners saying that Meta Ads are a waste of time and money.

Of course, I wanted to understand why.

I looked at several campaigns that had previously been managed by other “marketing agencies” and “freelancers” from the client’s perspective. One of the most common things I noticed was a lack of structure.

In many cases, there wasn’t even a clear answer to the most important question:

What is this campaign actually trying to achieve?

Here are some of the most common mistakes I’ve seen, especially from less experienced advertisers:

  • Not allocating enough budget to give the campaign a real chance to generate meaningful data.
  • Setting the wrong expectations from the beginning. Marketing providers sometimes promise results that the campaign, budget, or market simply cannot support.
  • Not taking advantage of Meta’s tools and optimization capabilities.
  • Letting campaigns run for an entire month without making adjustments, even when the data clearly shows that something needs to change.
  • Not having a sales process in place. Generating leads is only part of the equation. What happens after someone contacts the business matters just as much.
  • Failing to address the customer’s pain points. An ad should do more than promote a product or service. It needs to communicate why the customer should care.

And honestly, there are many more mistakes I could add to this list.

One thing I think business owners need to understand is that running Meta Ads today is not simply about “pushing” an ad to as many people as possible, like it was a few years ago.

Meta has evolved. The platform, its algorithms, its tools, and the way people interact with advertising have changed.

Yet, I still see advertisers treating Meta Ads the same way they did years ago—and when the results aren’t there, they assume Meta is the problem.

Sometimes, the problem isn’t the platform.

It’s the strategy behind it.
